Free Wi-Fi Pilot Project Planned for the Garden Route

The Garden Route and Little KarooThe Garden Route is one of the key areas identified to be part of the Western Cape’s free Wi-Fi initiative, which was launched last month.

The pilot project plans to connect 90 000 in Delft, Atlantis, Robertson and the Garden Route, with schools being given priority, before being rolled out to the rest of the province.

According to Charles George of Home of Compassion Ministries, a non-profit organisation running the project in Delft, connectivity in schools is in place, with communities expected to have access in the “coming weeks”.

Project Isizwe – which runs the free WiFi project facilitated by the City of Tshwane – is set to begin its Western Cape initiative in July. It will cater for Atlantis and Robertson, and Digital Village Communication will ensure connectivity along the Garden Route.

Alan Knott-Craig Jr, head of Project Isizwe, said connectivity will be provided over public access WiFi spectrum of either 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz and will use 15 to 20 base stations.
