Durbanville Hills Chardonnay Named in World Top 10

Wineries of the CapeDurbanville Hills‘ 2012 Rhinofields Chardonnay has made the 2014 Chardonnay du Monde top 10 list.

The list, decided at the Chardonnay du Monde in France, names the 10 best Chardonnays from around the world. A panel of judges tasted 794 wines from 40 countries. The Durbanville Hills wine shares top position with wines from France, Canada, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Australia and Spain.

The Cape is one of the great wine capitals of the world, with breathtaking scenery and legendary vineyards. Wineries of the Cape: The essential companion to touring the Winelands, by Lindsaye McGregor, a long-time contributor to Platter’s Wine Guide, is an indispensable companion to the area.

Durbanville Hills cellar master Martin Moore explains how the 2012 Rhinofields Chardonnay was created:

We follow a much gentler approach with our Rhinofields Chardonnay and believe that a Chardonnay should never be overpowered by wood. To ensure a seamless integration between oak and fruit we ferment and mature 60 percent of the wine in stainless steel tanks over a 12-month period. The other 40 percent spends the same amount of time in French oak barrels. We roll these instead of stirring the lees in the conventional manner.

Jenny Morris on the Many Uses of Figs – Including Their Interesting Medicinal Value

Taste the World with Jenny MorrisIn her latest column for The Next 48hOURS, Jenny Morris extols the virtues of the humble fig.

Morris, celebrity chef and author of Taste the World with Jenny Morris, lists the many uses of the biblical fruit, including its properties as a natural laxative or treatment for skin problems.

Figs also have an impressive nutritional value; as Morris points out, a dried fig has almost as much calcium as an egg: “good news if you are lactose intolerant”.

Dried figs contain minerals like calcium, copper, potassium, manganese, iron, selenium and zinc. 100g of dried figs contain 680 mg of potassium, 162 mg of calcium, and 2.03 mg of iron. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. Copper is required in the production of red blood cells. Iron is required for red blood cell formation as well for cellular oxidation.
